Clearing the Brush

The media-sanctioned speculation strongly suggests that the squatters were responsible for the blaze. The cynical rumbling -that seldom seems to make it through the concrete walls and minds of the National Broadcaster- is that fire is entrepreneurial in nature, a savvy business move to speed various processes along.
But whether careless short-term resident or jerrycan wielding contractor, is beside the point. The real culprit behind the conflagration that destroyed the derelict North West Produce building at 730 Terminal on January 27th is a cold, unyielding equation. The arsonist is a cash flow statement that quickly and efficiently sublimates the utility of any activity falling outside its shiny speculation/consumption axis.
You could make the case that food distribution is a basic economic activity supporting fundamental needs, but it looks ridiculous next to a new Porsche dealership.
One way or another, it has to go.

Yeah, what’s the deal with all these fires in buildings on valuable land in Vancouver? I’d be curious to know if this happens in other cities or, once again, Vancouver is unique in this sense.
I’m shocked -shocked!- by your cynicism, sir. I’m sure it’s just an advantageous coincidence.
Maybe burn down most of the dtes (with nobody getting hurt) then the developers will have a field day and mayor moon beam will be delirious with all the developer payola he’ll get.
Ah yes, a conspiracy, one so deep and dark that investigative journalism would be futile, so best we slouch in our armchairs and imagine; “that must be what is happening!” Not something mundane, or occasional, but a grand scheme of fanged demons in suits who command this City like a Monopoly board. Get real dreamer. Get. Real.
What conspiracy? The warehouse was rendered derelict by the economics of land development. Being derelict, it attracted an element that resulted in its destruction by fire. The rest is detail. Did you read the post?
